WPA Advocate Spotlight – Liz Huey

It was a happy moment in March of this year when Liz Huey’s name was drawn for a seat into the ladies’ event of the WSOP this summer. Unfortunately, Liz’s poker career did not stem from happy circumstances such as these. While an illness kept her bedridden for two years, she used online poker as a way to “keep [her] mind sharp.” It worked out well in the end as she eventually began playing live poker and even took her first plane ride to the 2009 Poker Queen Grand Championship.

Liz grew up in North Carolina, briefly moving to South Carolina before settling in Las Vegas in 2015. When hitting the tables, she says her favorite place for solid play is Red Rock, but she also enjoys The Orleans for tournaments and their popular bad-beat jackpots.

Liz says a big inspiration for her has been Jennifer Harman, who has also had personal health issues. She also mentions her children of whom she is very proud. On the flip side, she is frustrated by men at the poker table who underestimate and belittle women with rude, sometimes even sexual, remarks. Liz says that she believes women tend to be more emotional, but can overcome the discrimination if they “take more risks, believe in [themselves], and always learn as much as [they] can.”

Liz also had some positive parting words: “What you put in will be what you take out. May the cards turn in your favor!”
